Sodas are small, usually family-owned and operated, restaurants that can be found on roadsides, in major centers like San Jose, and everyplace in between. The term “soda” is generally translated as “diner”. – The Costa Rica News
Thank you to the staff of The Costa Rica News for broadening the world’s horizons. If you read the title to this article then you are probably confused or hungry now or staring at your food. A chuleta is a pork chop and a soda is a diner. We came across this piece and thought it worthy of sharing, just to show the power of words and how what something means to you may not be the same elsewhere. If you could picture a diner on the roadside then you are envisioning a soda.
Of great interest is the one and only original soda El Chelles
Checking out the Costa Rica Ticas Forum this is what one poster had to say about El Chelles “This is an all night bar, resaurant and deli type local hangout with a bit of local charachter.I go there often before going to bed.It is a great place for a late night snack or early morning breakfast. It is only one block east of the Presidente.A little snack before bed helps the hangover if I have had to mas cevazas. It is a quite reasonable place.” – rbc100
Another post from Four Square “Fenomenal para comer a cualquier hora. El refresco de fresas mmmmmmmmm! ” – Allan M.
This soda has operated for near a century and still serves the same dishes and the same clientele. Thank you to The Costa Rica News for introducing us and making us hungry at the same time.
