“During a surprise visit to Libya on Monday, US Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice congratulated the people of Libya for wresting control of their future from a brutal dictator and charting a path to freedom that is an inspiration to many around the world. She said that the US looks forward to continued strong partnership between it and the new free Libya.
At a meeting with National Transitional Council chairman Mustafa Abdul-Jalil and prime minister-desginate Abdurrahim el-Keeb, Ms Rice said she also wanted to commend the new Libyan leadership and the National Transitional Council on their commitment to reconciliation, national unity, human rights, and the rule of law.
Ms Rice, whose visit, her office said in a statement, was intended to witness and lend support to Libyan and UN personnel, played a pivotal role in convincing the UN Security Council eight months ago, to authorise the mission to protect civilians.
During her short stay in Libya, she visited a warehouse that during the era of the Al Qathafi regime was converted into a prison and torture room, calling it “an atrocity committed by the Al Qathafi regime as it was collapsing.”- Tripoli Post
