IT has to be said: The trouble that ended in five deaths near Port Moresby last weekend was a shock
to most.
After all, the people of Central Province have always been regarded as among the most peaceful, law-abiding and
religious people of our nation.
However the fact is that five people died after conflict over the land on which parts of the LNG project are to be
involved.
The rights and wrongs of the fighting and the deaths will be argued out in the courts if and when people are
charged with the killings.
However, it has jolted the complacency ofmany about the likely path of development for the project, at least that
part involving the people of Boera, Porebada and nearby villages.
Surely all the discussions and troubleshooting to do with the liquefied natural gas project had resulted in
preparations for dealing with violence in the Southern Highlands part of the project. Both folklore and experience
has proven that people in the mountains tend to flare up more visibly and physically when things do not go their

They share the same serene harbour and are separated by less than 4km but since last Sunday, the
ambiance and aura unruffled had somewhat dissipated.
These usually lively villages who for centuries only knew peace and tranquillity in harmony with the sea and the
picturesque hills were suddenly in a state of sombreness.
The big village of 20,000, Porebada had suddenly gone into bereavement combined with fury and hatred.
Boera on the other hand was deserted. The 5000 or so inhabitants including the elderly fled into the bushes and up
west to Papa and Lealea in dinghies and by foot in fear of their lives, an unprecedented experience.
Motuans are renowned for their peace-loving and easy going life style deeply entrenched with the United Church, a

Youths today say life is difficult and they take advantage of this excuse to practice various
illegal activities.
These illegal activities have contributed to the lack of development in PNG and needs to be seriously
addressed.
The National Economic Political Social (NEPS) Human Development is an NGO group which has taken the bold step to
help youths change their attitude and do something at the village level to improve their living standard and also
to keep them out of trouble.
NEPS provides efficient training for young people to help them participate in community work such as building a
fish pond, look ing after chickens and pigs. These activities helps in providing them with a small income.
